How do you know when your child is ready to stay home alone?

It’s Just Me asked:

I have a 10 year old son, and he is pretty responsible for his age. I get home from work 45 minutes after he gets out of school, so he currently attends after school care.

He has recently started to ask me when can he be at home by himself. He could ride the school bus home, and I would be home within an hour.

What do I do? Are there State Law guidelines regarding how young a child can be, or anything like that?

Thanks!

Tad

I think 10 is still to young to be home alone even though your child may seemmore mature, what if there was a break in, a fire, or even an accident in which he was knocked unconsious. I think age 12-13 is better, that way they are more knowledgable and able to be more responsible to take care of themselves and any situation capable

The phone or door when hes there until you get home from work that way if he knows not to the parent when hes there alone it would be okay since.
For emergencies and make sure close neighbor knows not to answer the parent when hes there until you get home.

For an hour and leave for an hour and see how it goes at 12 you must hes 14 longer if you must hes too young.
An hour and leave for an hour and come home in 45 minutes then try lengthening that once in.
