It’s Just Me asked:

I have a 10 year old son, and he is pretty responsible for his age. I get home from work 45 minutes after he gets out of school, so he currently attends after school care.

He has recently started to ask me when can he be at home by himself. He could ride the school bus home, and I would be home within an hour.

What do I do? Are there State Law guidelines regarding how young a child can be, or anything like that?

Thanks!

Tad

Given that it is such a difficult decision for parents/guardians to leave their children in the care of another- what are the five most important attributes or qualities that you look for in those that will be caring for your child?

We are considering maybe beginning to do foster care for infants/toddlers. I know the legal process/classes you have to go through, but as I don’t have kids I don’t have any of the items you would need to take care of children of this age group. We are planning to take up to four year olds, both boys and girls. Just one at a time. What is a general list of stuff that we should purchase in order to take care of this age group?

I’m looking for a book that explains everything- from how to bathe a baby to colic to developmental stages besides the book “what to expect during the first year.” Can anyone give me any suggestions?
Thank You!!!

I am a private sitter and this is the only family I babysit for. I am 32 yrs. old with my own three children (ages 1, 6, 7). I am struggling with what to charge. I provide food, transportation, and fun!
For the summer, the Mom agreed to pay me $100/day for all four kids (for three days/week..her idea). In the Fall, I will only have the infant and the 5 year old. Should I charge by the hour or week in the Fall and if so, what would be appropriate??

A mother of three went to England with the two normal children and left the retarded one in Jamaica with her dad who is now dead which the mom is aware of but refuses to take resposibility for the retarded child, who doesnt really have anyone to care for her. The childrens homes says shes too old for them to take her. How can i get the mom to leave England and care for her?
Shes with an old lady who took her while her father was hospitalized. now the lady is stressed out. I am not in a position to help besides searching for info for the old lady. the child is 16y-o, but she acts like a 2y-o. i gues thats the level her brain is at.
No one can contact the mom or the other two sisters in England. When the dad died she changed her address and contact number so no one would be able to contact her. Neither of them are British citizens. There is nothing that the Jamaican Government is willing to do to help. or so they say.

I am a manager and one of my employees is having some attendance problems. Her child gets sick occasionally and she does not have other family who can help take care of them so she has to take off of work. They are all legitimate illnesses, but they are more than allowed by company policy and I really want to help her because she is responsible and reliable when at work. Are there any childcare options for her when her child is sick?

I have helped raise my two little brothers and I have taken care of kids for many years.

My husband has never really been around kids and held a newborn baby for the first time a couple of months ago.

I found 3 childbirth DVDs that have childcare, breastfeeding, Lamaze, etc on it. Its about 6 hours on each DVD.

We were thinking about watching the interactive DVDs and reading the many baby books we bought.

If he felt uncomfortable still, then we would go to the classes.

Did you take the classes? Any advice?

How much would you pay or do you charge for infant private care at their home? In California nannies make between 16-22/hour to go to peoples homes. Day cares typically make 5/hour b/c they have mass amounts of children. Whats fair? What would you pay? This is for an infant!
